The summer I turned 18 was the best summer of my life. Just out of High School with college and our lives awaiting us, my friend Kyle and I spent that halcyon summer in a gatekeeper’s cottage on the East End of Long Island.

I have always known my older sister was better than me in every way. Smarter, prettier, more popular, perhaps… more loved? Growing up I was merely a secondary planet in orbit around her blue-eyed, golden-haired magnificence. She did everything first, better, and with a self-confidence I just never had. She is also a much better knitter than I am...

I’ve always been a worrier (that’s WORRIER, not WARRIOR!). Picture a long scroll of paper, the end fading out somewhere into eternity; written on it, are my worries. Usually I concentrate on the top 3 things, which vary from day to day. Frequently the Top Worry actually turns out not to be a problem and miraculously disappears, but then the Next...

Creating patterns is a lot like having children; they don’t always come out as you intended, and often wind up being A LOT more trouble than you expected!
Crochet: Cloche Hat
I, like so many others, fell in love with Daisy’s hat she wore to the picnic with Mr. Mason. She also wore it in her “goodbye scene” with Alfred, part of which was unfortunately relegated to the cutting room floor. Here’s what REALLY happened:

Alas, My Pretties, for me the design process is like a journey through a Garden Maze. In the beginning I may have a vague idea of what I want to design. I usually have an inspiration that propelled me into the maze, which may or may not make it through to the finished pattern. As in wanting to portray the delicate pendulous hearts on my Bleeding...

I have never been one to shrink from my duty, as my late husband would attest, were he still alive to bring testament to the fact. So when Cora begged me to advise her distant cousin - yet another American, from a deflowered branch of the family tree - I felt it my moral obligation to take the poor woman under my wing, so to speak.

I would tell you a thrilling yarn, filled with perilous adventure and tender romance, of epic battles and heroic rescues, daring duels in the streets of 15th century Florence, and deadly encounters with crazed zombies. That world outside is a dangerous place, filled with drama and heartache. No telling who you’ll meet next, what he’ll do, or what she’ll say. But whether at work, school, or just chillin’, one thing’s for certain - someone is always watching. You need to get your Ninja armor on, girl!

When my daughters were toddlers, my sister (“Auntie Barbara”) made them those adorable Pumpkin Hats to wear. You’ve seen them, they’re everywhere, and each one cuter than the last. High School was difficult for me, academically as well as socially. And those plaid circle skirts (made by my mother), with red tights and white ankle socks won me neither fashion nor academic accolades! But I eventually had something in my wardrobe to draw admiring rather than horrified stares in the hallways of Hunter College High School.

OK, you caught me. I was SUPPOSED to be cleaning and vacuuming in preparation for the weekend houseguests, but what was I doing instead? Kerfuffle is a silly shawlette, or maybe it’s a scarf, I’m not exactly sure. However, when I saw those 2 skeins of Malabrigo Worsted Merino in Halcyon Yarns last week, I knew they were meant for me, and meant to be joined together by me in a long “something-or-other” as my Ravellenics project.

Yesterday was a really bad day. My favorite red crayon broke (RIGHT IN HALF!) before I finished drawing on the dining room wall so I had to switch to purple!
