Welcome to the garden! This edition of Little Knits is a knitted romp through our Autumn garden in the northern forests. Each piece is inspired by plants and elements of garden structures, and planting.

It’s no secret that green and growing things make my heart sing. From my garden to the woods, open fields to farm stands, plants always make me feel at home.

One of my favorite pieces of Spring is when the evergreens in our little forest start to send out new brilliant green tips. These little tips, when harvested responsibly from a large area are beautiful in teas and pastas, as well as making a lovely pickle!! (Always check with an expert before consuming anything you find in nature!!).

Meet the Baranduin Socks, a cozy LOTR inspired design with all the cables and braids you need. Simple yet engaging, they are sure to be the perfect fit for any knit wardrobe.

Cliabh Cap features a slight roll to the edge of the brim, fish-tail cables, and sections of texture between the columns of cables, separated from the band by a lateral braid.

Some of the most memorable stories from my favorite childhood books, begin their adventures in an attic.

Mini Beatrix Blouse

Midsummer in our northern woods means evenings aglow with the delicate and enchanting light show of fireflies. Each night, the edges of woods begin to sparkle as the sun’s light fades below the horizon. No matter how old I get, these gentle evenings never lose their magic.✨

Inspired by light and flowy summer peasant tops, the Beatrix Demi Blouse features a panel of eyelet lace, a square scoop neckline, drop shoulders, crochet scalloped edges, and a double drawstring hem. All the delicate romantic details a late summer piece needs!

Beautifully subtle, the Secret Garden Socks feature a toe-up construction, a minimal floral texture motif, and a GSR heel.

In the early Spring one of the first things I do with my little ones is braid flower crowns, or in their words “Fairy Crowns” now that Spring has brought a carpet of blooms I cannot think of a more fitting name.

The second pattern in a collection of designs inspired by my favorite book and its film adaptation The Secret of Roan Inish.

The Tadhg Socks are the first piece in a collection of designs inspired by a story and film that hold a very special place in my heart, The Secret of Ron Mor Skerry, or The Secret of Roan Innish. Its a beautiful folktale set on the Irish coast in the early 1940s, which tells the tale of the Selkie lore as modern myth.

I dearly love the slow spring days, spent braiding flower crowns with my little ones.

The Hedgerows Shawl is a minimal and meditative knit, drawing inspiration from botanical shapes.

Inspired by the familiar shapes of traditional patchwork quilt blocks, the Sawtooth Quilt Pullover combines the nostalgic coziness of a handmade quilt, with an engaging yet simple knit.

The Skylark Socks are a light and delicate design that brings together all my Spring knitting dreams.

There’s nothing quite like the nostalgic coziness of an old quilt.

Even in the dead of winter I’m dreaming of flowers. The Arianne Mittens are the perfect combination of the warmest of wools, and softest of florals.

The winter landscape in our Northern home is a wash of subdued hues. Golden sunsets, and crisp leaves still clinging to the branch, grey mornings, bare bark, and firewood, with every surface dusted with snow.

Sweet Everlasting may be my favorite wildflower. Dainty blooms that spring from tough and sandy soils. The soft scent of maple syrup that never ends.

OVER THE MOUNTAINS & INTO THE WOODS

The cheerful golden flowers of the Tansy plant are the picture of late summer to me. Filling roadsides, park trails and open fields.

For these socks I wanted to make a design that felt cozy, romantic, and nostalgic and I’m so very happy with how they turned out!

A cherished treasure from the woods, acorns have always had my heart.

A carpet of wee purple blooms welcome in the Spring each year here in our Northern forests, and the Wood Violet is a wildflower that is truly dear to my heart.

Neat rows of vivid pansies popping up in our garden boxes are one of my favorite parts of Spring! They are also the inspiration for this sweet little socks.

Inspired by the beautiful illustrations of Astrid Lindgren’s The Tomten storybook, and companion to the Tomten Socks, the Tomten Pullover is finally here!

The Bluebell Dress is a light and cozy dress design, perfect for little ones who love to twirl!

Spring is finally here, and with it my longing to be in the garden grows even faster than the green shoots emerging from the sleeping soil.

The Bramble Slippers followed the Bramble Mittens, jumping off my needles onto my feet!

The Poppy Adult Cardigan, is a burst of floral inspired knitting to get us through the late winter thaw. Although there is still snow on the ground in our Northern home, I am dreaming of flowers.

The Snowdrop socks are a cozy and minimal sock design. They feature a floral texture motif, framed by lateral braids, a twisted rib cuff, and GSR heel.

All proceeds from this pattern will be donated to the Ukrainian Red Cross Society.

Poppy Kids Cardigan is nostalgic Fair Isle design with a retro silhouette, and simple colorwork. A perfect layering piece over dresses, and skirts.

Inspired by the delicate red blooms of the Poppy flower.

Named for the plant who’s wee seeds catch and hold you as you walk the woods in Autumn.

Inspired by the sweet little red capped fungi that lined the floor of the oak woods of my childhood home, the Russula Socks are a cozy colorwork sock.

Inspired by fireside stories, deep forests, and dark moss covered cottages of wood and stone, the Folklore Socks are a cozy design that pairs simple texture with a band of bright ribbon-like stranded colorwork.
