The lotus motif, also known as Sesen, is found throughout Egypt, on pillars, in tombs, on thrones & headdresses of the divine, the Pharaohs. It’s the symbol of the sun, rebirth & creation as it closes at night and sinks below the water and rises and reopens at dawn. The lotus is the main motif of this hat, surrounded by swirls at the bri...

What to do with ODDS & ENDS? You know, those tiny balls of yarn, not enough to make much with but still beautiful and often expensive little bits.

One of the most underrepresented ethnic areas in the knit world is the African Continent. It is home to some of the most colorful and artistically rich areas I have researched. When knitting, we often stay with motifs of areas with rich knitting traditions, Fair Isles, Scandanavia, & South America to name a few. These motifs are the basis fo...

This hat and earband use the Ridge & Furrow motif, a series of knits and purls that mimic the pattern an old fashioned hand plow makes in the ground before planting. My husband grew up on a farm so this one is a natural for me!

The “reindeer hat with trees” is a staple & a classic. It’s been done many times before, but that’s why these motifs are so often reused. Many hours spent looking at old photos, designs and shapes helped bring this reinvented reindeer hat to life. My daughter loves it - always a good sign - and the braid and tassel in a “pop” color make it p...

This hat sports a favorite cable found in an old stitch book of my Aunt Mary. It’s called the Double Chain Cable and has seed stitch weaving in and out of the cable. This is an advanced beginner level hat - the cable is 24 rows, but only 2 of the 24 require a cable needle. Knit flat, then seamed up the back, fur is optional but is simple to put ...

Dream Weaver is a favorite ski trail on the beautiful south face of Okemo Mountain in Vermont. It’s long and winding, wide and open. It makes me feel like the star in a ski commercial when traversing it. I am a “green circle, beginner” skier, translate that to “pity” skier.

When my son was small, he loved a song that Bruce Springsteen did on a charity album of children’s songs. It was about chicken lips, lizard hips and alligator eyes, all ingredients in a concoction called “Mama’s Soup Surprise” He loved it so much, I designed a lizard sweater for him. All these years later, knitting for my nephew’s children, I wa...

Knitting: Christmas Stocking
This stocking echoes a popular sentiment, “Keep Calm and……” in this case, “Be Merry”. A recent trip to England showed me the way this World War II poster sentiment has been brought into the present. In the frenzied lives we often lead, Christmas is the time to slow down - and wait for Santa to fill our stockings! A houndstooth cuff s...

When my son was little, he wore a tool belt and carried “Cool Tools” everywhere with him (when he wasn’t dressed up as a cowboy, of course.) I made him lots of hats, but never a tool hat, though I did make a tool sweater. My nephew’s kids want hats and their mom told me I couldn’t go wrong with “tools, animals...

This is a truly a simple beauty of a cowl. I created a Boston Strong Hat in April of 2013 and it was so well received, it blew me away. Copley Square, Boston is one of my favorite places on earth. To me it is the heart of Boston. And one of the windiest places I’ve ever walked through in winter.
